Do You Take The Advice Of Your Fears Or Your Confidence?

“Do not take counsel of your fears.” -George S. Patton

Keep this in mind when you are faced with how you are going to deal with your fears. As strong as your mind may be, if you take the advice of your fears, you will find yourself quitting and never trying anything new. When you choose to go against that same advice and listen to your confidence, you can overcome your fears and move towards accomplishing your goals and dreams.

In moving out on my own for the first time with my wife, when we were dating at the time, I was presented with a situation that had me wondering. She had shared with me that she had quit her job and that the job she was hoping to get did not come through, which left her without any money to put towards the rent for the first month.

As you can imagine, the inner fears were creeping in, and it left me wondering if I could handle this and did I make the best decision in the world in by moving out with her. If I had made the decision to listen to my fears, I probably would have backed out and gone back home where things were safe for me.

Instead of taking counsel of my fears, I listened to my confidence. I reassured her that I can handle this situation and that we would be fine. That confidence led to me being able to handle it for the both of us. The long-term effect was the following:

  • She married me a year after we moved in, and we are still married-13 years and counting!
  • I gained confidence in my ability to be able to take care of my own household regardless of the situation.
  • Most importantly, I learned that as long as I believe in myself, my confidence will always beat my fears in any situation.

This video is very important to watch because you can see how a little girl was able to overcome her fears of the dark by believing in her ability to protect her little brother. You have the ability inside of you to rise above your fears, but you have to make the choice to not let your fears dictate how you choose to live your life. Let’s remember that taking counsel in your fears will lead to you never starting nor finishing anything in your life, but taking counsel in your confidence will lead to you finishing and succeeding at any thing you choose in your life.
