“A joke a day keeps the gloom away.” -Cesar Romero
Keep this in mind whenever you wonder what value a joke has in your life daily.
A joke has true significance when the joke is properly timed and can make someone feel happy.
Today’s inspiration is all about you telling a joke that can be valuable to yourself and others. We will discuss the following:
- What is a joke?
- What goes wrong with jokes?
- What types of jokes can you tell that are funny and valuable?
What is a joke?
Merriam-Webster defines a joke as:
-
Something said or done to cause laughter.
-
A brief story with a surprising and funny ending.
-
Someone or something that is not worth taking seriously.
You can see where a joke is meant to be funny, but somehow, we tend to sometimes take jokes the wrong way.
What goes wrong with jokes?
There is a lot that can go wrong with jokes in our lives. Here are a few things that go wrong with the jokes:
- Bad timing. The joke occurs at time where we do not desire it in our lives.
- Bad delivery. The joke is delivered in a manner where it can be offensive or harmful.
- Bad results. The joke that was originally supposed to cause laughter can cause sadness.
If not careful with the joke and how we use it, it can cause more harm than good.
What types of jokes can you tell that are funny and valuable?
Jokes truly have the power to be funny. Using the definition above, here is how jokes can be funny and valuable.
- Something said or done to cause laughter.
- It is okay to do and say something to cause laughter as long as you understand your audience.
- Say and do things that will take people minds into happier place where they are not offended or harmed.
- A brief story with a surprising and funny ending.
- A story can have a funny and surprising ending as long as you are brief with it.
- The story must be something that people can envision themselves because if they cannot, you will lose them.
- Someone or something that is not worth taking seriously.
- Someone or something does not have to be taken seriously as long as you understand that they are simply trying to make you laugh and have a good time.
- Allow for the person or thing to entertain and balance out the seriousness in your life with some funniness.
If all three are done in the right way, it will bring joy, laughter, and happier lives.
I encourage you to either tell a joke or receive a joke daily. If you tell a joke, understand that you cannot control how people will receive it, but if you understand your audience, you will know when, where, and how to deliver it, it will reach the person you want in the right way. If you receive a joke, simply laugh because not everything is meant to be serious. Let’s remember to tell and receive jokes the right way because with them, we are laughing and happy, but without them, we are serious and boring.
I have a few questions to ask you and please have some fun in answering them. Feel free to answer and comment below.
- What was the funniest joke you have given or received?
- What impact did that joke have on you or that person?
- Will you tell or receive a joke today?
- What would you recommend to someone who is considering telling a joke today?

Thank you for your comment and insight euny! You are right that jokes can lead to death when it is delivered and/or given to the wrong person. The challenge with jokes is making sure that the right joke is delivered to the right person.

So glad you wrote this. We forget that there is power in our words. They can build up or tear down. Too many people use so called humor as a tool to hurt others. Laughter is good medicine just make sure the medicine is not poison. Great post!
