What Or Where Is Your Sanctuary?

“Within you there is a stillness and sanctuary to which you can retreat at anytime and be yourself.” -Hermann Hesse

Keep this in mind whenever you are looking for a refuge from the craziness that exists in the world. I know that we all have experienced some type of craziness and chaos in our lives that makes us want to find refuge somewhere to get away from the madness. Here is a few questions and answers to get some insight on sanctuary.

What is a sanctuary and how is it defined?

Sanctuary is defined as a place of refuge and safety. What people define as that place vary from person to person. That person also can change up what they call their sanctuary depending on the situation or circumstance.

Where and what do people find sanctuary in?

You once again have to ask that person. They can find sanctuary in the gym, church, home, beach, and mountains to name a few places. They can also find sanctuary in eating, shopping, exercising, cooking, and blogging to name a few activities.

Often times in hearing where and what people find sanctuary in, there is one place that is missing that never changes: WITHIN YOURSELF! Here are a few questions to dig into this special place.

Why would you want to find sanctuary within yourself?

Unlike the other external factors that you can only go to if certain conditions are met (shopping needs you to have money, home needs you to keep paying bills and rent/mortgage, vacations need you to have money and time off), you can go within yourself at anytime without meeting certain conditions. Inside of yourself, you can close your eyes and dream, meditate, and focus/refocus on what it is that you want to do. You can also reset your mind, process in what you have experienced, and refresh yourself as to what it means to be yourself.

Why would you want to run away from being within yourself?

You may think finding sanctuary in someone or something else could take your mind off  of things that may be going on in your life. The problem is that in running to those places, you never really deal with the main source of your problems: YOU! Although you maybe the source of your chaos and craziness, you are also the source of your inner peace and answers.

I encourage you to take time out of your day everyday to just be within yourself. You do not need a special place or time to do it. Just take the time and close your eyes and just breathe for a moment. Give yourself an opportunity to just take in what it means to be you and enjoy the moment. Finding sanctuary in yourself is one place that nobody can come in and destroy as long as you do not allow for them to. Let’s remember that you can find sanctuary in anything and everything, but the one place that will never change and will always be there for you in your time of need is WITHIN YOURSELF!

I have only two questions to ask you, and really give some thought with this question. I would love to hear your feedback on this:

  • What or where is your sanctuary?
  • Why is that your sanctuary?
