Keep this in mind as you look to today and every other day you have afterwards.
At midnight, 12:00 A.M., or 0000 (for those military folks like myself) every day, a new day begins every day. You have 24 hours each day to accomplish and become successful at something. When those 24 hours are up and the clock strikes midnight, 12:00 A.M., or 0000, that day you just lived is now called yesterday and a new today will immediately begin.
I tell you this to let you know that starting at midnight, 12:00 A.M., or 0000 each new day, you have a chance at a new beginning. With that daily, you have two options:
- Accept and take advantage of your new beginning.
- Reject and continue to reflect on what could have been.
Whatever option you choose will ultimately determine whether or not you accomplish the things that you want and desire out of your life.
For today’s inspiration, I want to focus on you understanding what is before you not only today, but for each new day that you are living. My goal is to give you some tools that will help you develop the mindset to take advantage of every new day and do something that will help you become successful daily.
Now it is time to get into some questions!
What can make you focus on what it could have been?
There is an actual term for this very thing, and I am sure we all are guilty of doing this at least once in our lives: counterfactual thinking. Here is Psychology Research and Reference’s definition:
- “Counterfactual thinking focus on how the past might have been, or the present could be, different. These thoughts are usually triggered by negative events that block one’s goals and desires. Counterfactual thoughts have a variety of effects on emotions, beliefs, and behavior, with regret being the most common resulting emotion.” -Psychology Research and Reference
Due to counterfactual thinking, it is easy to look at the past or present and think about what you could and should have done differently about someone or something. There is no telling what can trigger these thoughts and how you may behave as a result, but rest assure that the more time you focus on what you could and should have done each new day that you have, the less time you have to focus on doing something to make your life become the beauty that it truly can be.
What are you missing out on when you look back on what it could have been?
Although you will have moments where you are looking back on what certain things and people could have been in your life, it is important to recognize that depending on how much time you spend in those memories and moments, you could be missing out on countless opportunities each day. I will give you a list of ten easy things that you could be doing new each day that could make your life better than you can imagine.
- Meeting new people
- Learning a new skill or talent
- Doing and enjoying favorite hobbies
- Gaining education or knowledge
- Laughing and smiling
- Meditation or prayer
I am not telling you that you cannot have moments of counterfactual thinking, nor am I telling you how long it should take you get over such moments. What I am telling you is that when you allow such moments to dominate each new day you have, you are missing out the golden opportunities to make your life better and successful.
What are five things you can do you to make your life all that it can be?
You have only 24 hours in each new day that you have. If you are choosing to make each new day that you have moving forward all that it can be, I have a few steps that will help you do just that.
- Look and accept who and what you are.
- For each new day that you have, start off by looking at yourself in the mirror and accept what you see whether good or bad.
- In addition, do some self-reflection and soul-searching to identify and understand who and what you are currently.
- Remind yourself that you cannot control or change the past, people and things outside of yourself.
- Constantly remind yourself that you cannot change what happened yesterday, nor can you change someone or something that is outside of your control.
- You can do this through daily affirmations, writing, and meditation.
- Set and achieve realistic daily goals.
- Set for yourself daily goals that YOU are able to achieve without dependency on people or things.
- Make sure your goals have realistic and easy steps for you to follow to ensure success.
- Find at least one positive person or thing in your day.
- Take time to seek out at least one person or thing that makes you smile and feel good about your day.

- Be thankful for who and what you have every day.
- Learn to give thanks to the people and things that make your day the best that it can be.

If you are able to apply these five steps, you will be able to get the most out of your life and make each new day that you have all that it can be.
Let’s remember that each new day you have is your chance to be successful, but you must look forward and do things to bring you to where you want to be.
